The word culture is a short seven-letter word, but it’s so dense and fulfilling. Through culture, we understand who we are, where we belong, and where we are going. Culture hides within itself a world hidden from plain sight. It is through a culture that we know to boil the fever bush or that using salt on everything solves every problem. Do you have a cut? Pour salt on it. Did you forget your toothpaste for your weekend getaway? Use a little salt on your toothbrush. Are you washing some vegetables? Wash them in salty water. Culture captivates and catapults its people into its own hemisphere and while we fly high above, it’s culture that sustains us. It’s culture that the most honorable Shirley Lee Ralph embraced to hone her craft and most recently secured a prestigious award. It’s culture that ensures that Harry Belafonte songs will always be etched in our memories. His iconic songs such as “Kingston Town” and “Day Oh” is known by music lovers worldwide. It’s culture that captivated the entire nation and made us laugh, cry, and reflect as we read and reminisced with the late Charles Hyatt for his childhood memoir “When Me Was a Boy”.
